THE LIFE YOU KEEP LEAVING

You're getting through your days.

But are you actually living them?

We have become very good at being everywhere.

Available to everyone. Responding to everything. Planning what's next. Chasing the next milestone, the next achievement, the next version of ourselves.

Yet, somewhere in the middle of all that living, we can lose touch with the life happening right in front of us.

We listen to respond, rather than understand. We sit beside the people we love while our attention is somewhere else. We postpone the conversations, the quiet moments, the things that matter — telling ourselves we'll get to them when life slows down.

But what if life never slows down?

What if, in our pursuit of doing more, achieving more and becoming more, we are quietly missing the very things that make life worth living?

This isn't simply about being busy. It's about what happens when being busy becomes a way of life. When distraction becomes our default. When surviving the day takes precedence over experiencing it. When we become so focused on where we're going that we stop noticing where we are.

And it doesn't happen all at once.

It happens in the moments we barely notice. The conversations we don't quite hear. The people we love who receive what is left of our attention. The parts of ourselves we keep promising to come back to.

Until one day we realise, that later has been taking more from us than we ever imagined.

What if the greatest thing you're losing isn't time, but the experience of being here to live it?

Through powerful storytelling, lived experience and thought-provoking insight, Justin P Van Tonder invites audiences to challenge what they have come to accept as normal — and rediscover the profound impact of Presence, Awareness and genuine Human Connection.

The Life You Keep Leaving is a keynote about the life happening beneath the noise. About the cost of constantly looking ahead. About how we show up for ourselves, for the people around us, and for the moments that will never come around in quite the same way again.

It speaks to individuals, leaders and organisations alike, because no matter how successful we become, how much we achieve or how full our calendars are, we are all human beings trying to find our way through the same finite thing: life.

This is not about abandoning ambition, doing less for the sake of doing less, or escaping the world we live in.

It is about learning to be more present in it.

To listen differently. To notice what we have stopped noticing. To recognise when we are merely getting through life rather than truly experiencing it.

Because the goal was never simply to get to the end of the day.

It was to be here for it.

So, before you move on to the next thing, consider this:

How much of your life are you truly living… and how much of it are you quietly leaving behind?

The life you keep leaving is the life you still have time to return to.

Meet | Justin P Van Tonder

I have spent much of my career exploring what makes people connect — with brands, with stories, with experiences, and with one another. But somewhere along the way, I began to realise that while we have become increasingly skilled at creating connection, we are not always as present in the moments that matter most.

My work sits at the intersection of storytelling, human connection and the power of presence. With a career spanning strategy, brand experiences, incentives, media and content development, I have spent years creating experiences designed to move people, shift perspectives and leave a lasting impression.

Then life brought me to a moment I could never have planned for.

Walking alongside my mother through her Stage 4 cancer diagnosis during the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way I saw the world.

In the uncertainty, the waiting and the moments when life seemed to stand still, I began to recognise something I had spent years overlooking: how easily we can become so occupied with what comes next that we lose sight of what is happening right in front of us.

That realisation became the starting point for a much more personal journey — one that led to my first book, space between breaths, and my keynote, The Life You Keep Leaving.

Today, through my writing and speaking, I explore the hidden cost of disconnection, the language we use to avoid what matters, and the small but significant ways we leave ourselves, our relationships and our lives waiting for later.

My approach brings together strategic thinking, emotional depth, vulnerability and the kind of storytelling that invites people to see familiar things differently. Not simply to feel inspired in the moment, but to question how they are living, what they may be overlooking and what it means to truly show up.

Because I believe presence is not something we find when life finally slows down. It is something we choose, even when it doesn't.

And perhaps the most important question is not what we are working towards, but what we are missing along the way.

Life is not happening later.

It is happening now.
